Together we transform - Mural
2022
Context:
I designed and illustrated a 4x6 meter mural for the Women’s Affairs Office in Morelia, Michoacán, focusing on women's empowerment and free expression.
Objective:
The aim of this project was to design and illustrate a mural for the Women’s Affairs Office (Secretaría de la Mujer) in Morelia, Michoacán, Mexico, as part of a government initiative to promote women’s empowerment and free expression. The challenge was to create a visually impactful artwork that resonates with diverse audiences, celebrating the strength and unity of women across generations while addressing the importance of empathy, kindness, and peace within families.
Role:
As the lead illustrator and designer, I was responsible for conceptualizing the mural’s design, which measures 4 meters wide by 6 meters tall. I began the process by creating a detailed digital version of the mural, ensuring that it captured the essence of the theme before translating it into a large-scale physical artwork.
Concept:
The concept centers on women's free expression and the union of different generations, offering hope to the youngest generation (girls) through respect, empathy, kindness, and peace, beginning within the family. The design incorporates symbolic elements, such as the flower—a peaceful emblem often seen in protests worldwide—and the raised fist, symbolizing strength, resistance, and the power to speak out. Vibrant colors, especially orange, which represents the #25N (International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women), emphasize optimism for the future of women and girls.
The diversity of skin tones, eye colors, and hair represents freedom of identity and choice, while the new generation is depicted wearing the purple feminist handkerchief, a symbol of their awareness and empathy for peaceful activism.
Outcome:
The mural was unveiled to a positive reception from the community and local officials, serving as a visual testament to the values of respect and empowerment for women and girls. This project not only enhanced the visibility of the Women’s Affairs Office but also solidified my role as an advocate for using art as a medium for social change and community engagement.
