Somos lo que dijimos – Poster Illustration
2025
Context:
I illustrated the poster for the documentary short film Somos lo que dijimos by Andrés Alonso, inspired by Hilda, a Mazahua language teacher preserving her native language through education. This short film and poster were part the Morelia International Film Festival.
Objective:
To visually convey the connection between teaching, community, and cultural memory, reflecting the documentary’s tone.
Role:
Sole illustrator. Developed the character, composition, visual storytelling, and overall poster design.
Concept:
The poster centers on Hilda in her traditional attire, drawn with a childlike line to evoke her students’ perspective. The school is depicted in the background as the heart of learning. A rooted flower symbolizes knowledge growing and spreading through the community.
Collage-style landscapes, paper scraps, and school materials reference daily classroom life, grounding the story in Hilda’s village. The cool gray, blue, and yellow palette mirrors the film’s aesthetic. Mixed techniques—ink, watercolor, pencil, and collage—create depth and texture.
Highlights:
– Character illustration reflecting cultural identity and teaching.
– Mixed-media composition combining symbolic storytelling and textural layers.
– Visual representation of education, language preservation, and community.
– Part of the Michoacana section at the Morelia International Film Festival.
Outcome:
The poster amplifies the documentary’s message, honoring Hilda’s work and celebrating cultural resilience through illustration.
