Transforming pediatric spaces with art
2022
Context:
A series of murals designed for the pediatric quimiotherapy unit at ISSSTE Hospital in Morelia, aimed at transforming the space into a comforting and imaginative environment for young cancer patients. Three murals were printed and installed, while one was painted by a local artist following my design.
Objective:
To create a warm and creative atmosphere for children undergoing quimiotherapy and for those in isolation rooms, providing a visual escape from the hospital environment.
Role:
Lead Illustrator and Project Coordinator.
Process:
After visiting the hospital and discussing the project with the medical team, I designed four distinct themes for different areas:
Space-themed mural (Chemotherapy area): Inspired by the idea of children as astronauts, floating through a light and imaginative space filled with friendly stars and planets. The astronauts' spacesuits mirrored their hospital gowns, offering a sense of playful empowerment.
Forest-themed mural (Playroom): Designed to represent a curious forest with whimsical trees and a playful raccoon, using light colors and gentle shapes to create a serene and welcoming environment.
Aquarium-themed mural (Isolation rooms): Featuring a large blue whale named Berta, symbolizing strength and curiosity, this mural invited children to imagine underwater adventures. The use of bubbles and oceanic elements connected the design to the other murals.
Jungle-themed mural (Additional rooms): A jaguar, representing courage and resilience, stood proudly among lush green foliage. The character's playful pose encouraged children to feel empowered and supported.
The materials used for the murals were non-toxic, suitable for hospital environments, and printed to facilitate installation. For the playroom, a local cancer survivor volunteered to paint the design I created, adding a personal touch to the space.
Outcome:
The project was met with great enthusiasm from hospital staff and patients. The murals helped brighten the children's experience by offering a sense of wonder, sparking their imaginations, and reducing their anxiety during treatment. Through collaborative efforts, the hospital became a more welcoming place for both children and their families.
